Get out to explore nature and play a fun game of Bingo!

Have you ever noticed that everything is more fun when you have competition or a game involved? Whether it’s playing sports, having a read-a-thon or even something as small as going on a walk, it’s always fun to make a game out of whatever you’re doing. Especially with young kids. My 4 year old got a new tablet for his birthday and ever since he prefers playing games or watching YouTube videos over anything else. Because of that I’ve started to come up with fun activities to get us out of the house.

Last year I made each of my boys a Color Scavenger Hunt Kit and I let them build their own again this year. Sadly it hasn’t kept their attention as long as it did last year. So I started brainstorming other fun outdoor games or activities we could do. Before my mother in law passed away we loved playing Stargo, a constellation version of Bingo, with her. Several times a week we would go over and together as a family we would learn about the stars and play bingo. She would always have a special treat for the kids (and mom and dad) after the game too; which made it even more fun!

So to keep her memory alive I made up my own Bingo game; Nature Bingo. It’s super easy to play all you need is:

Somewhere outside to walk (backyard, park, mountains, etc.)

Your family (because everything is better together right?!)

Reward or treat at the end (I chose ice cream sundaes)

One night after dinner I surprised my boys with their bingo cards and told them we were going on an adventure. We were playing bingo just like we used to with Grandma the only difference is we had to find the pictures outside. I also told them after all of us got Bingo we would come home and have a special treat.

Next we walked around our community and started crossing off things we found. My boys felt they needed to color the whole square in which worked too. After Rohrl, my oldest, got bingo I had him help his younger brother get bingo too.

Then we came home and I brought all the ingredients for an ice cream sundae out to the porch. I love using the Ibotta app to earn cash back on groceries and when I saw Smucker’s Ice Cream Toppings were one of the rebates I knew that sundaes would be the perfect prize for Nature Bingo! So when I was at Walmart buying groceries I picked up some Blue Bunny® Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream, Smucker’s Magic Shell Chocolate Topping, Microwaveable Hot Fudge and Caramel Flavored Sundae Syrup. Ice cream is good but it’s always better when there are yummy toppings involved and I love making homemade sundaes because it’s so much more affordable than going out to get it (and a whole lot easier with little ones too). You should have seen their eyes light up when I brought everything outside! The only thing that could have been better was if Grandma was here to enjoy it with us.

What fun plans do you have this summer for getting your kids out into nature? If you’re having trouble getting your kids away from their electronics, ice cream sundaes are always a good motivator. And don’t forget you can earn cash back on Smucker’s Ice Cream Toppings with free Ibotta app!

Timing Tips:

How long a bingo game lasts depends on what pace you read the clues at and how many players you have. If you read faster, such as for older or more experienced students, or if you have more players, the game tends to end more quickly. In general, I suggest allocating between twenty and thirty minutes to a bingo game. Since they can potentially end as early as the fourth word called, though that is quite rare, I encourage you to keep playing in the event of the game being over earlier than you expected it to be. Almost 90% of bingo games with a 25 word list and 25 players will see their first bingo within 7 to 11 words being called.

Card Customization Tip:

You can use Bingo Card Creator to change the card size. This will help if you do not have a lot of time or for younger audiences.

You can use Bingo Card Creator to add pictures or change the free space to make a truly personalized bingo game .
